Tony

We are a group of Christians committed first to Jesus and then to historic Baptist principles. Our passion for Jesus manifests itself in our worship, which is both traditional and joyful; our missions, which are both local and global; and our inclusivity, which includes accepting any form of Christian baptism and affirming both men and women as worshippers, servants, and leaders. Our commitment to Baptist heritage is seen in our participation in the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and our affirmation of principles like the autonomy of the local church and the priesthood of all believers.

The previous paragraph is my attempt to communicate something of who we are, especially to folks who know nothing about us. But it does not do justice to the warmth of our church family and the joy of our faith. So please visit our church, which will give you a feel for who we are and give us the opportunity to welcome you in person!

GENERAL ASSEMBLY

JUNE 23-26, 2010

CHARLOTTE, NC

This year the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship celebrates its 20th General Assembly, June 23-26, in Charlotte NC.  This is a wonderful location for members of Greenwood First Baptist to particpate!  One of the highlights of the annual meeting is the commissioning of new CBF Global Missions Field Personnel.  The service is scheduld for 7:00 pm, Wednesday, June 23 at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church in Downtown Charlotte.  (There will be no activities scheduled at GFBC on Wednesday, June 23, so members may participate in the comissioning service.)  Bill Leonard, dean and professor at Watke Forest University Divinity School in Winston-Salem and author, Lauren Winner will lead in worship during the assembly.  Other new features this year include the Essentials Conference, Discover Your Passion, and the  Leadership Institue.  To register for the General Assembly or to learn more about the event click here.

First_Baptist_Campaign                              A PLAN FOR  GENEROSITY

The four Sundays prior to Advent, I have preached sermons related to the devotional book Generosity by Gordon MacDonald and Patrick Johnson.  The last chapter of the book mentions the use of “pledge cards.”  Although, I am not asking individuals and families to turn in a pledge card, I am asking everyone to formulate a written Generosity Plan for next year.

We believe that such a plan should include not only our finances but also our time and our spiritual gifts.  The goal is quite simple.  Many of us have a sincere but rather non-specific intention to generously give God our time, our spiritual gifts, and our money; but we don’t quite follow through because we have not formulated a prayerful, specific, intentional plan.

We hope and pray that this plan will lead to that follow-through, which will enhance your spiritual formation and help our church fulfill its mission from God.  If you have not had an opportunity to obtain a 2010 Generosity Plan guide, please use the PDF link below.  Please use this guide to prayerfully formulate your plan, and know that I am praying for you as you do so.
